Intestinal obstruction with cancer

Intestinal obstruction is a violation or a complete lack of progression of the food lump in the intestinal tract of the digestive system. It can occur acutely or for a certain period of time.

One of the complications of cancer is intestinal obstruction. With cancer, this condition develops due to the progression of the disease, which indicates the ineffectiveness of therapeutic therapy.

Causes of intestinal obstruction in cancer patients

Intestinal obstruction develops due to its compression from the outside by a tumor conglomerate or germination of the neoplasm into the intestine. Feces can not move through the intestines, which leads to stasis and the appearance of characteristic symptoms. Similar conditions are observed in cancerous lesions:

  • intestines;
  • ovaries;
  • the uterus;
  • Bladder;
  • prostate cancer.

Oncoprocesses in the above-mentioned organs can develop both primarily and as a result of metastasis of malignant formation of other localization.

Intestinal obstruction is not manifested by a sharp deterioration in the condition. Often this is preceded by dysfunction of the intestine in the form of constipation, swelling and rumbling in the abdomen. Symptomatic gradually increases, nausea, vomiting and pain syndrome join.

Painful sensations are spastic. The higher the obturation (blockage), the faster vomiting will begin. With lesions of the large intestine, only nausea and late appearance of vomiting are possible. It initially consists of gastric contents, but in the future it acquires a yellow-green tinge with a feces smell.

Also, worried about swelling and rumbling. As the intoxication syndrome increases, the pressure decreases and the pulse increases.

Instrumental techniques use radiography with barium, ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, colonoscopy and laparoscopy. With the help of tomography, the prevalence of the cancer process is estimated and the amount of surgical intervention is determined.

Operative treatment

Before the intervention, preparation in the form of infusion therapy and elastic compression of the veins of the lower extremities is necessary. After the laparotomy, the prevalence of cancer is estimated and the scope of the operation is determined.

Thus, partial removal of the intestine with the formation of anastomoses and colostomy can be performed. When inoperability is imposed bypass anastomosis.

The postoperative period is very important, as it is necessary to replenish electrolyte losses, restore the protein composition of the blood, the function of the intestine and control the consistency of the anastomoses.

Treatment with medicines

A conservative approach in the treatment of obstruction is used at the initial stage after the examination and assessment of the patient's condition. It is recommended to put a nasogastric tube to empty the stomach and reduce vomiting.

Intravenous antispasmodic, analgesic and antiemetics are administered, and subcutaneously - "Proserin" for the purpose of stimulating the intestine. Also, the epidural catheter can be inserted and the medications can be administered, which will remove pain and improve peristalsis.

In addition, enemas are used to empty the bowel, stimulate it, and divert gases.

Treatment with folk remedies

Traditional methods of treatment of intestinal obstruction in cancer differ from traditional drugs by the absence of adverse reactions, which increases their popularity among cancer patients. However, it is worth noting that intestinal obstruction is considered a serious complication of cancer, so the use of folk recipes is prohibited until the oncologist's consultation.

It is recommended to undergo examination, assess the danger of the condition and only after the doctor's permission to apply folk therapy. It is aimed at improving intestinal functioning, promoting stool and reducing dyspeptic manifestations of the disease.

What complications is dangerous intestinal obstruction in cancer?

In the absence of timely treatment, serious complications develop, including:

  • necrosis of the intestinal wall;
  • sepsis;
  • gross violations of water and electrolyte balance.

Peritonitis develops as a result of the outflow of intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity. As a result, there is an intense pain syndrome, the temperature rises to 39 degrees, pressure decreases, heart rate increases, paleness of the skin is noted and sweating increases. This complication requires immediate surgical intervention, otherwise the risk of death is high.

As it became clear, as a result of the progression of oncological disease, intestinal obstruction develops. In cancer, this complication indicates a relapse of the disease or ineffectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy. The prognosis, in most cases, is unfavorable and depends on the oncological stage, the age of the patient and the presence of concomitant pathology.
